I am a Culinary Professional and have worked in Food Service for over 20 years in various parts of the industry. My passion for food and the Culinary Arts is a never ending pursuit and I have created this blog as a way to inform the masses of the Great, Good and Not So Good establishments in Wilmington, NC and surrounding areas. Here you will find detailed accounts of my experiences as a customer or should I say...a Critic Undercover! I have spent countless amounts of hard earned money on food that I would not serve to my dog much less allow my friends or family to endure, but in the same regard I have also stumbled upon some of the most amazing restaurants and feel that the Owners & Chef's along with their menu's should be brought to light and applauded. So I hope you enjoy my blogg and Bon Appetit ya'll!

Buddy's Crab House & Oyster Bar ~ Topsail Island, NC

Monday, September 5th...Labor Day

Got to sleep in a bit and enjoy a cup or two of Java with out the usual morning rush of packing lunch for my son and catching the bus at 6:47...needless to say, it was Labor Day and I was not going to do anything that I didn't want to do except enjoy my family and go get some good food!

Around noon we decided to avoid the tourist and venture over to Topsail and visit our old faithful Buddy's Crab Shack & Oyster Bar. Having gone there for many years I knew we would not be disappointed..it was going to be a good day indeed!

As we cross the bridge I had that old feeling come back of a very familiar place...Topsail reminds me of days growing up in Atlantic Beach and the Crystal Coast. Topsail just gives me that feeling of a "Locals Only" town and I love that. I can't wait to sit down in the open air atmosphere that Buddy's offers and enjoy a cold beer with my best friends...my husband & my son...of course my son had a sweet tea..no beer for little man..LOL!

We pick the table in the left hand corner of the out side bar so we can have a good view of the left over Irene swell that the line up was so eagerly waiting for. It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining, humidity low and the beach was trickled with enough but not to many sun worshipers. The barkeep comes over to us, hands us menus and we order our drinks. After a few minutes she returns with my Blue Moon, a sweet tea for the little man and a Miller Lite for my husband....all is good except he didn't order a Miller Lite but rather a Bud Lite...she was gone before he could even point out the mistake...whatever, a beer is a beer and it was cold.

A few minutes later another server comes over and takes our order...what happened to the bar keep? No big deal...it happens. A good waitstaff helps each other out and they were busy...nearly every table in the joint was full with shrimp peeling, oyster shucking and beer drinking patrons and that's a good thing! I proceed to order a dozen steamed oysters for my son (med please) and my husband got the Calamari. I myself had to have the Steam Bucket for 1...and I had no intentions of sharing...LOL! We order another round of beer and take in the scenery...did I mention it was a gorgeous day!

About 20 Min's later our food arrives from yet another server. Little man is so excited and can't wait to dig into his oysters and I am pretty stoked about the bucket set before me with Oysters, Shrimp, Crab Legs, New Potatoes & Corn on the cob....wait, where are my Clams? Excuse me...but my clams are missing? Our "third" server was glad to check on that and would be right back. Promptly she returns and tells me that they are out of clams and our "other" server told me that and they put extra shrimp and oysters as a replacement. Ok....well, I was never told that by the "other" server but that was fine...I'll take extra for the other..not a big deal...but I am thinking to myself...I was not told that. I just love it when some servers place blame on the customer for their lack of information to the guest...Clue #1: It's called 86...when the kitchen is out of a menu item the FIRST thing you do before taking an order is to inform the guest what they are not able to order...hello!

Anyway...I being a beach baby and raised around the ocean know a good oyster when I taste it. Being that its September and we are not yet in Oyster Season here I already knew that that oysters that we ordered are coming from the Gulf...big, very juicy and NO FLAVOR! Clue #2: Brine them!!! Kosher Salt...steam them in Salted Water...not that hard! Steam them until the Shell opens....let the Salt creep in...makes a HUGE difference! If you are going to over charge for oysters at least help them out with a little flavor. However, my plethora of shrimp were steamed to perfection along with my yummy sweet crab legs and the accompanying sides were just as tasty. My husbands calamari was...ok he said. That means he didn't like them...LOL. After 10 years of marriage I know his "food lingo"..and "ok" means....it's "ok"...LOL. I didn't sample...I was to busy helping little man open his "closed" oysters...and he knows how to crack open those guys...they were not cooked to preferred temp to say the least. All in all the food was "ok", but the atmosphere was AWESOME!!

To sum up our experience we had a great time. If you are looking for a cool place full of locals, good music on the juke box, cold beer, an amazing ocean breeze and good steamed shrimp Buddy's is your place!

Critics Advice ~
1.If you are a server there...please introduce yourself and let us know if we are going to be passed off.
 2. If the kitchen is out of a menu item, inform the guest so we can make another choice..it happens.
 3. Listen to your guest...when they order a beer make sure you bring them the beer that they ordered and    hang around long enough for the them to point out the mistake...again, it happens.

Visit their website at
http://www.buddyscrabhouse.com/
...they have a lot of great links on there as well as hours for both locations and the menu.

They also have another location in Wrightsville Beach, NC at the foot of Johnny Mercers Pier...I have never eaten there but I will say I LOVE to sit at the open air bar, drink a few cold ones and watch the people pass by. The bartenders there are ALWAYS on point and it's always a friendly & welcoming place to sit and let your cares flow into the sea air.

Cheers!

The Margarita Grill ~ 6317 Market Street, Wilmington NC

So about 3 weeks ago I was driving down Market Street and noticed this beautiful new sign where the old Fire House used to be. It was bright and eye catching to say the least with a big Parrot and the words..."The Margarita Grill" written on it. The first thing that came to mind was....Jimmy Buffett and a BIG FAT MARGARITA...and the Cheeseburger too! Now, me being a huge JB fan and a Margarita addict I knew that this would be our next dinner out no doubt! After all, I am all about supporting local business and to see that someone has the smarts in this town to open a knock off Margaritaville I was pretty stoked to give a try.

After braving Irene and eating out of a cooler for 3 days I decided it was time to try this exciting new establishment...boy were we in for a surprise! We pull into the parking lot on a Monday night and there were a few cars in the lot, nothing out of the ordinary as Monday's are generally slow for most restaurants and I welcomed the chance to really see this place shine without the crowd....kind of a chance to take it all in so to say.

As we walk in I noticed just exactly how quite it was...not inviting at all. The music was turned down so low you could barely hear the 80's classic rock that was playing...not there that is anything wrong with that, I too love some some old Bruce Springsteen, but it was a far cry from the Jimmy Buffett/Caribbean Soul I was expecting. There was no one at the hostess stand to greet us and for a moment I thought they might be closed? As I peer around the corner I see a "few" people sitting at the bar and nothing but empty tables for miles. I still have no clue where the people were that belonged to those cars in the parking lot? After standing there for about 30 seconds wondering what to do I asked the guy at the bar if we should just sit down or wait to be seated..."sit where ever" he said then returned his eyes to his ever demanding lap top. I later find out that this is the owner...nice!

We sit at a table near the bar in hopes that we will be seen by our waitress only to have to move twice to other tables that wouldn't flip over when the food is brought out. I knew right then it was going to be a huge waste of money and I would not be getting my Seared Tuna on a Salad that I was craving all day. The only Tuna or fish for that matter that was offered on the menu was your classic pile of mayo based salad that comes out of a can...and this was listed on the menu under " Chicken & Fish"...so disappointing to say the least!

After sitting there for 10 minutes we are finally greeted by our server..she was nice but seemed a bit confused...kind of like "What are you doing here and what do you want"? Mind you we are the only people in the pace besides the few lushes bellied up to the bar. I ask if there are any Margarita specials and the answer was...no? OK...I will just have a sweet tea and my husband will have a beer. We proceed to order from the menu that is mostly comprised of your usual "bar food". Fried Cheese Sticks & the ULTIMATE Chicken Nachos please....oh, we are out of the Cheese Sticks...she replied. I am trying to figure out who exactly she sold them to? Weird!

We put in our dinner order along with the one appetizer...the ULTIMATE Chicken Nachos. Notice I keep emphasizing ULTIMATE...I'll get to that in a moment. Anyway, I see nothing on the very limited menu that even remotely satisfies my craving so I order the Margarita Burger...figured I could get some little taste of salt or sour mix in there some where. This came with no sides...I ordered a side of Baked Potato Salad and my husband got the same thing. Please God let this be a decent burger...I am STARVING!!!

Now...as we wait for our ULTIMATE Chicken Nachos I am starting to take in my surroundings a bit. Margarita Grill...Margaritaville...Margarita....whatever. There is nothing in this place that even comes close to what the sign portrays unless you call a few Landshark promo signs an attempt at creating the so called Caribbean atmosphere? The only cool thing to look at in the place was the 110 gallon fish tank in the entry way that contained 2 HUGE Jack Dempsey's...but we were told they are Purana's....and yes she was serious! Now they do have an amazing Copper Sun hanging from the ceiling...ahhh, that's where all the start up money went...in a wall hanging! The window's had no blinds or curtains and all I could see was an awesome view of the dumpster.

Back to the Nachos...after about 15 minutes they arrive at our table complete with 4 inch Styrofoam plates and a plastic bathroom Dixie cup of Sam's Club's finest Salsa. The shredded chicken was unseasoned and cold, the bright yellow cheese came straight out of a #10 can and was cold as well. I have been served better nachos at my son's baseball games...ULTIMATE was a far cry from what we got. The lettuce was wilted and the bagged chips were stale. No Bueno!

Our Burgers arrive about 20 minuets later and I will say...not bad! Hand made and nicely seasoned...but a toasted bun and a fresh slice of pineapple would have made it a bit better over the bun right out of the bag and a ring of juiced up pineapple from a can. The potato salad was fresh and homemade yet lacked seasoning and the portion size was way to much, but I guess they needed some way to fill up the rest of the plate...no garnish of any sort and my husband was handed a huge plate with this burger sitting in the middle. A little creativity could have been inserted here. Maybe a pickle wedge, put the topping on the side??? Maybe?

$31.95 later we are ready to get the hell out of dodge...or Margarita Hell should I say. It took us another 15 Min's to get our check. Our server had gone on a smoke break and we pretty much sat there waiting..and waiting and waiting. The owner never came over to us to see how we were doing, never even looked our way...oh...wait, he did. When our son who is almost 10 years old went over to the pool table and rolled a ball around (probably because he was bored off his rocker waiting for the food) he shot me a nasty look...kind of like "why the hell is your kid touching my pool table" look. So I guess he did look at us...my bad. We paid our tab, said thank you and left.

With all that said...we will never be going back there again. It's a sad day when owners think that slinging beer on a Saturday night is going to pay the rent in a place like that. You have got to know the business inside and out, make your menu and customer service your top priority and goal and live up to what you are representing. If anyone needs a great place for a restaurant, I am pretty sure it will be up for lease in about a month.
